The idea to establish the OneCall Foundation was born out of a desire to assist a family that lives close to me. This family has 2 terminally ill children, and had recently been denied Katie Beckett gap funds from the State of Georgia. On a “good month,” this family spends over $1,000 out of pocket on co-payments for medication.
Several women that lived my neighborhood wanted to raise money to assist them. A benefit dinner was planned and these ladies solicited items needed for consumption. Many local businesses (Publix, Sam’s Club, Home Depot) were contacted. Each of these businesses made donations that were invaluable. As a result of the dinner and silent auction, over $5,000 was raised for the family. Over 125 meals were served that evening.
Several businesses, however, were unable to assist our efforts due to the fact that the organizing party had no Tax ID number. Many businesses had company policies which precluded them from helping anyone not organized as a 501 (3) C. Establishing an organization such as the OneCall Foundation, Incorporated resolves this issue and will assist future efforts to raise money goods and services for other families with similar needs.
