The idea to establish the OneCall Foundation was born out of a desire to assist a family that lives close to me. This family has 2 terminally ill children, and had recently been denied Katie Beckett gap funds from the State of Georgia. On a “good month,” this family spends over $1,000 out of
pocket on co-payments for medication.
There are many families in similar situations. I have a friend whose 9 year old son has neuroblastoma. They spent months at the Mayo Clinic at his bedside at a hospital watching him battle cancer. How did they make their house payments? Their car payments? I don’t want to see people losing their homes while their children fight to live. We probably cannot raise enough to help cover every situation-but we can help them in a very real and positive way.
Raising a non-communicative child with autism can be incredibly difficult without help. OneCall set Sophia up with a non-profit organization in her area that offers regular assistance to families of children with autism and provides special programs on afternoons and weekends so kids can have fun, and parents can have a break.
OneCall Foundation has also been supporting Dr. John Bratcher’s Jamaica Missions teams since 2014. Since the late 1980s, John and Vanetta have been taking teams down to Jamaica to assist with various projects. From building wells, running water pipes, painting schools and churches to providing medical supplies John’s teams have been making an impact. John’s teams have also run multiple soccer camps for kids in the area and have also been instrumental in taking well loved equipment down to the kids in the area. I personally have been one of these trips, and its incredibly humbling to watch a kids eyes light up when he or she gets a pair of cleats to play in, or his or her very own ball.
Ed is an employee where Jon L works. He is a part-time employee who is in his 70s. He was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. His treatment was going to require him to make daily trips 40 miles away to Cancer Treatment Centers of America. OneCall coordinated with other co-workers so that Ed had transportation to and from his treatment every day. Ed’s wife has Dementia. OneCall also raised money so that Ed’s wife had a sitter while Ed was getting his daily treatment.
